Day 2: Where Are the Fish?
Grab your homework from yesterday and let’s get started with day 2! (if you missed the first article in this series, you can view it here: https://www.upwarddesigns.com/timesaver-tips-week-day-1/)
Day 2: Where Are the Fish?
Growing up, my mom’s parents loved to go fishing. They would take their pickup and hook on the camper, then hook on the pontoon boat behind. They would pick a spot based on where the fish were biting according to the local “news,” and would spend a few days or a week at a time out on the water fishing. If they didn’t catch anything, they would move on to their next favorite spot and give that a try. The reward at the end of the day was fresh fish for supper, and if your pole was really “hot,” you’d have extra to toss in the freezer for later!
How well do you know your customers? What is their buzz or local “news”? Have you asked where they get information online for similar products or services to what you are offering?
If you’ve ever gone fishing, you know that some days you catch nothing and some days you catch a bucketful of fish, even if you do exactly the same routine each time. The same is true for reaching potential clients – some days your marketing efforts will be golden, and some days it won’t.
But how do you catch more fish on average? You use the right bait, fish in the right spots, and listen to the local “buzz.” Translating to customer terms – offering the right product in the right place, and making changes based on feedback from your ideal clients.
Grab that homework from yesterday, and make a list of all possible places your clients could be reached online. Is it when they read a newspaper online? Could you advertise on social media to reach them? If so, which channel are they very active on? Take surveys of your existing clients, and people that you want to work with. Are they active in the same places? What is your industry doing as a whole? Would those marketing methods work for you?
Keep working on that list. Revisit this one often to make sure that you are showing the worms to the right fish!
